( I ) School on Wheels – A Mobile Classroom

A novel and first of its kind concept for the city of Greater Hyderabad is the ‘School on Wheels’. This school has been able to reach out and touch the lives of many children in many slums. The bus goes to different areas where children are living on the footpaths. At every place two hours of education in Telugu and Mathematics is given. They are also provided with an egg and a banana everyday to combat malnutrition.

A new bus has been transformed into a classroom equipped with books, teaching aids and audiovisual equipment - all of which makes education exciting and learner friendly.

Manned by two teachers, this school moves around the various slum settlements across the city and runs a truly mobile school for around two hours at each stop.

Children who have been brought into the mainstream are attending the school regularly in Government Primary School, KPHB  Road no.1 and  Government High School, Shamshiguda. They were provided with school uniforms, school bag, note books etc.,

( II ) Sneha Kunj – Children Home

We have heard that a house is made with bricks, but a Home is made with hearts. Unfortunately the homes of few children around us, have become unfit for their overall development. The severe poverty, migration to cities, neglected by parent/s, child abuse, child labour, step-parents attitudes are some of the reasons which are hindering the child’s overall development.  Sneha Kunj is a Home where, children in difficult circumstances are taken care of. The children include orphans, semi-orphans; economically very poor background and each of them have a story behind. The Children are provided with food, education, health and above all care and love. The Home is child friendly and lots of visitors, especially women are encouraged to visit regularly to spend time with these children. All the Children attend the formal regular schools in the locality. Some of the boys and girls are studying in Montessori High School (Kukatpally) and others are studying in Zilla Parishad High School (Yellammabanda slum). There are trained staff to take care of these children round the clock. A child friendly atmosphere is maintained and there is a daily routine to be followed.

( III ) Community Centers:

The community centers are meant for young girls and women in slums. Tailoring, hand embroidery and machine embroidery courses have been introduced to make girls and women self supportive. Some of the candidates who were trained in our centers are working in reputed garments showrooms and some of them established their own sewing centers. They are earning some income to support their families. At present there are three centers being run.

As there is a saying ‘Don’t give fish, teach them fishing”, that is what we have been doing. There are number of stories that we can narrate, about our former students who now became earning member of the family. This gives them not only financial satisfaction, but also a great self confidence. The sewing machines are provided with a qualified tailoring instructor.

( IV ) Support to Government Girls High School:

CLAP is supporting a Government Girls School located at Moosapet. There are qualified teachers in Government School, and only the poorest of the poor prefer to go to such schools, because there is no fee to be paid. We have adopted only class X girls and are  providing educational materials like question banks, guides, from time to time. The school is located in Moosapet, & falls under Kukatpally Municipality.  Four students, who have passed out in class 10, were admitted in Gayatri Junior College, S.R. Nagar. CLAP is supporting their college  fee and books. We are glad to share that with the teachers hard work and our little support, the school stood 1st in 10th class results, in the year 2010-’11 with 82% of pass.
